Fatal error c0000034 64 bit Windows 7 SP1

Wouldn’t it be interesting to tally up the $$$ wasted by your customers dealing with this issue.  Not good.  I’m heading out on a consulting gig later this week so fired up my new Win7 64 bit laptop to do a bit of prep work only to have it lock up on boot with Fatal error c0000034 on update 291….  Seems a LOT of people are having bad experiences with SP1.

To get back into Windows I have to,

  • Boot in recovery mode
  • Go to the OS drive which was D:\ on my machine and find the pending.xml file in D:\Windows\Winxs
  • Search for 0000000000000000.cdf-ms
  • Delete
    <DeleteFile path=”\SystemRoot\WinSxS\FileMaps\_0000000000000000.cdf-ms”/>
    <MoveFile source=”\SystemRoot\WinSxS\Temp\PendingRenames\e56db1….-ms” destination=”\SystemRoot\WinSxS\FileMaps\_0000000000000000.cdf-ms”/>
  • Now save and reboot
The start windows screen will take about five minutes, then a failure to configure service pack message will be displayed, after which you can log in.  Very bad form Microsoft!
